Hands-on museum that GIVES A new life to a historic building

Key Features

An educational and cultural center in an underutilized building

Use of technology to bring the past to life

Flexible space design for multiple purposes

The Need

Smith Field in Fort Wayne once played a crucial role in our nation’s history of Airmail service. The National Airmail Museum approached Tessellate with an idea to turn an under-utlized airplane hangar into a historical and educational center.

Our Approach

Starting with the iconic airplane hangar, Tessellate’s design accentuates the physical structure to create an immersive space that embodies the authenticity and possibilities of early twentieth-century aviation. Historical recreations are interspersed with technology and an active airplane restoration encourages interaction between guests and museum staff.  Aviation Adventure can also be used for large-scale events that serve  the institution’s ongoing fiscal sustainability, creating a unique and authentic place for educating and engaging a broad community.

The National Airmail Museum will be a place for the community to come together and celebrate the storied history of Fort Wayne and the city’s role in aviation history and the development of the National Airmail Service. The Museum will be housed in Hangar 2 at Smith Field Airport and feature interactive, hands-on exhibits that provide an in-depth perspective and bring this story to life. The museum will also be home to the Experimental Aircraft Association’s (EAA) Chapter 2 Headquarters, gift shop and a uniquely themed dining experience.
