The Need

The Center for Jewish History sought a design for a temporary exhibit that captured the colorful spirit and deep history of the Jewish Comics experience. Each partner institute provided a unique perspective to the story. The design system expressed the dynamic and exciting nature of the content.

The Approach

Our design process started with understanding the needs and goals of the exhibit. Each partner institute provided a unique perspective to the story. The design system expressed the dynamic and exciting nature of the content.

Located in two major galleries, the design needed to address the flow of visitors by creating two unique spaces.

The lower Gallery A features larger-than-life comic book structures that delve into the history and origins of Jewish comic book artists and their impact on the comics industry as a whole.

The upper gallery B was envisioned as an interactive and participatory Lab experience, complete with a dress-up selfie activity that explores character creation. In addition, multiple stations invite visitors to create their own comics using pre-drawn magnetic panels, speech bubbles, thought clouds, and dry-erase markers. Self-expression and creativity are at the center of these free-explore experiences.
