EARLHAM COLLEGE GATEWAY MUSEUM CONCEPT

a museum that embodies Quaker values

Key Features

  • A unique structure that completes the academic environment

  • Design that embodies the college’s values

  • A cross-disciplinary museum welcoming the extended community

The Need

Earlham College wanted a destination to serve as a natural history museum, art museum, Quaker history museum, an academic space to house living labs for the sciences, as well as a meeting place for students and the community. They desired a design that encourages collaborative, inclusive, and multidisciplinary work which leverages their collections and technology. Earlham approached Tessellate to create a space that unites the college with the community, and celebrates their special relationship with the region and their Quaker roots.

The Approach

Tessellate designed a concept for a building that embodies the founding principles of Earlham College’s Quaker values: integrity, equality, simplicity, community, stewardship of the Earth, and peace. The building celebrates the College’s legacy and serves as a public gateway to the rest of the campus. The architecture leverages their collections and unites the campus with the local and global community in a collaborative, inclusive, and multidisciplinary environment.
